Postural Assessment in Birmingham: What to Expect at Functional Body Clinic

Updated: 5 days ago

Pain rarely starts where it ends up. That nagging lower back pain might be rooted in how your pelvis is positioned. The tension across your shoulders may originate from the way your thoracic spine moves — or doesn't. A thorough postural assessment is the starting point for understanding your body and treating the cause rather than just managing the symptoms.

At Functional Body Clinic in Birmingham, every new client begins with a comprehensive assessment. Here's exactly what that involves.

Stage 1: Case History

Before any hands-on work, we gather your full history. This includes your current symptoms, how and when they developed, any previous injuries or treatments, your occupation, activity levels, and lifestyle factors. Understanding the context of your symptoms is just as important as the physical examination.

Stage 2: Postural Assessment

You'll be assessed in a standing position from the front, side, and behind. We're looking at the overall alignment of your body — the position of your head, neck, shoulders, ribcage, pelvis, and feet. Deviations from neutral alignment create predictable patterns of muscle overload and underused, which often explain the location and nature of your pain.

Common postural findings include forward head posture, rounded shoulders, anterior or posterior pelvic tilt, lateral pelvic shift, scoliotic curves, and limb length discrepancies. Each finding informs the treatment approach.

Stage 3: Movement Assessment

Static posture only tells part of the story. We also assess how your body moves — looking at range of motion, movement quality, and any compensations or restrictions. This might include spinal flexion and extension, shoulder mobility, hip rotation, or gait analysis depending on your presenting symptoms.

Stage 4: Orthopaedic Testing

Where appropriate, specific orthopaedic tests help identify the structures involved in your symptoms. These tests can indicate whether a nerve, joint, muscle, tendon, or ligament is the primary driver of your pain, and help rule out conditions that require referral to another healthcare professional.

Stage 5: Soft Tissue Examination

The hands-on examination assesses tissue quality, muscle tone, trigger points, areas of restriction, and joint mobility. This confirms and refines the findings from the visual and movement assessments.

What Happens After the Assessment?

Following the assessment, you'll receive a clear explanation of the findings — what we found, why it matters, and how it relates to your symptoms. A treatment plan is then agreed with you, including hands-on work, self-care exercises, and postural mitigation strategies you can use between sessions.

Importantly, your initial session at Functional Body Clinic always includes treatment — you won't just be assessed and sent away. The assessment informs what we do with the remaining time, ensuring your treatment is precisely targeted from the very first session.
